New Land Rover Discovery SVX production preview equipped with Goodyear concept tyres

LandroverSVXFrankfurt, September 2017 - Goodyear designed state-of-the-art concept tyres for the new Land Rover Discovery SVX production preview, showcased from September 14-24th at IAA 2017 in Frankfurt.

Goodyear has developed a tailor-made concept tyre to meet the manufacturer's specific requirements for this new Land Rover production preview, a premium off-road leisure vehicle with the capability to go anywhere, aimed at the luxury end of the SUV/4x4 market.

The tread and sidewall of the tyre express the vehicle's design philosophy. The tyre carries the 'Discovery' naming on the sidewall, with the spokes of the rim flowing seamlessly into the side wall design. The tread, with its deep grooves, provides excellent grip for challenging off-road conditions. Furthermore, the letters 'X' in the tread pattern from the Discovery SVX logo reinforce the identity of the concept vehicle.

Goodyear has a long-standing supply relationship with Land Rover, with many approved fitments across its range. Most recently, new fitments have been announced for the new Land Rover Discovery and the Range Rover Velar.

"We are very proud that our concept tyres are showcased on the exciting Land Rover Discovery SVX production preview, as presented by Jaguar Land Rover's Special Vehicle Operations in IAA 2017. It represents a further confirmation of Goodyear's capability of meeting leading car manufacturers' requirements and translating them into innovative designs", commented Nick Harley, Goodyear's Managing Director OE Consumer EMEA.

Goodyear Advances Connected-Business Model with Automated Tyre Facility

  • Growth in Vehicle Models, Options Drives Increasing Demand for Premium Tyres
  • Innovative Mercury Production Process Allows On-Demand Fulfillment of Customer Orders
  • New Luxembourg Facility to Begin Production in 2019

September 12, 2017 - Advancing its connected-business model, The Goodyear Tyre & Rubber Company today announced plans to create a new facility in Luxembourg that utilizes an innovative production process to meet growing customer and consumer demand for premium tyres.

Named Mercury, the proprietary process features highly-automated, interconnected workstations, using additive manufacturing technologies to efficiently produce premium tyres in small-batch quantities on-demand for replacement and original equipment customers.

Goodyear Chairman, Chief Executive Officer and President Richard J. Kramer announced Mercury and the company's plans at the groundbreaking event for the facility. "Mercury addresses the increasing complexity in the tyre industry as the number of vehicle models and options available to consumers continues to proliferate," said Kramer. "It gives us the capability to increase our speed and flexibility to meet the growing demand for small volumes of high-margin, premium Goodyear tyres and to deliver them to customers on demand, faster than ever."

"Mercury will advance our connected business model, which aligns all of our assets - from the production floor to consumers who choose Goodyear online and at retail," he added. "It will complement our existing high-volume facilities and give us a true competitive advantage."

The new facility, set to open in 2019, is in close proximity to Goodyear's Luxembourg innovation centre and tyre proving grounds. The company is investing $77 million in the facility, which will produce approximately 500,000 tyres annually and create approximately 70 new, full-time positions.

The technology used in the Mercury production process was developed and tested over the past five years at Goodyear's innovation and development centres. The name Mercury is a reference to the mythical god of trade and travel, which inspired the creation of Goodyear's winged foot logo by company founder Frank A. Seiberling.

Goodyear Announces Intelligent Tyre Trial, Expands Fleet Management Solution for Semi-Autonomous Fleet

goodyeartesloop

  • Intelligent tyre integrates with connected car fleet to deliver data-driven diagnostics
  • Focus on data gathering and analytics to serve shared mobility business models
  • Effort builds on successful launch of Goodyear Proactive Solutions for commercial fleets

September 8, 2017 - A long-time leader in tyre management for racing, trucking and aircraft fleets, The Goodyear Tyre & Rubber Company is now applying its expertise to a fleet of semi-autonomous electric cars.

Goodyear announced that it is equipping Tesloop, a city-to-city mobility service that exclusively uses Tesla electric vehicles, with wireless sensors in its tyres to improve overall tyre management and maximize uptime for its growing fleet.

"We want to build the future, not just observe or read about it," said Chris Helsel, Goodyear's chief technology officer. "As the new mobility ecosystem continues to take shape, we are taking steps to match the pace of technical change in the transportation industry and develop tyre innovations that meet the intelligence of the vehicles riding on them."

The wireless sensors continuously measure and record tyre temperature and pressure, which is paired with other vehicle data and connected to Goodyear's cloud-based proprietary algorithms to enhance overall fleet operations and predict when the tyres need service or replacement.

As part of the program with Tesloop, Goodyear is also extending its mobile fleet solutions to passenger vehicles, providing tyre maintenance and repair while Tesloop vehicles are at charging stations, during regularly planned downtime.

"When you are operating cars nearly 24/7/365, minimizing tyre incidents is critical to the customer experience and the business model," said Rahul Sonnad, Tesloop's CEO. "The possibilities for data-driven tyre diagnostics are remarkable and promise to help a business like Tesloop operate more efficiently and make our vehicles the safest on the road." Tesloop operates a fleet of Teslas that average up to 17,000 miles per vehicle, per month. Its highest-mileage vehicle, a Tesla Model S in operation since 2015, recently exceeded 300,000 service miles. Goodyear has been working with Tesloop since January 2017 to study the effect of autonomous technologies on tyres.

Goodyear's effort with Tesloop builds on its successful commercialization of Goodyear Proactive Solutions for truck fleets, using advanced telematics and predictive analytics technology to allow fleet operators to optimize fuel efficiency and precisely identify and resolve tyre-related issues before they happen.

In addition to its fleet management offerings, Goodyear is also working with automakers to provide tyre information to vehicle control systems to enhance safety and performance.

Helsel added, "Goodyear is breaking new ground with the combination of fleet management expertise, intelligent products, and a vast service network to deliver complete solutions for the future of mobility."
